Soul is a genre of music born lately 1950s from "the urbanization of the rhythm'n blues and the secularization of the gospel". Clyde McPhatter, Hank Ballard, et Etta James were the first artists to contribute to the emergence of Soul music. However American singer, songwriter, musician, and composer Ray Charles is often quoted to having democratised the genre. 

Funk is a kind of music born in the middle of 1960s of a mixture of soul, jazz and R&B genres. The genre was developped by African American artists like James Brown and George Clinton.
